The du Ponts acquired Chandler Farm in the last century\, when the family purchased land next to Winterthur\, at the time a private estate and home to herds of cattle and sheep. In 1958\, Henry Francis du Pont designated the red-brick\, Federal-style farmhouse as the residence for the museum’s director.
